Unless solutions based on international law are found soon, the smouldering conflicts in and around Nagorno-Karabakh, Abkhazia and southern Ossetia are threatening the entire southern Caucasus region with destabilisation. This was stressed unanimously by participants from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, attending a three-day seminar held in Brussels by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty.

FNF Regional Director of Southeast and East Asia, Mr. Hubertus von Welck, and Dr. Peter M. Manikas, NDI Regional Director for Asia, presented their views regarding political party reform on the Asian continent to a large and varied Brussels-based audience consisting of Members of the European Parliament, representatives of the European Commission, leading Think Tanks and consultancies as well as of political foundations, foreign embassies and non-governmental organisations.

Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, member of the European Parliament, who headed the team of EU observers to Kenya accepted an invitation extended by the Transatlantic Dialogue Programme of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty to address 130 attendees in Washington, D.C. He spoke about his experience as an observer to the elections in Kenya in late December last year. He frankly admitted in his opening words that he had not expected such exciting experience. After a few words regarding the structural background to this mission he came right to the point and spoke about what he saw in the country.

The Dialogue Programme Brussels resumed its Thought bites at Lunchtime series in 2008 by holding an event on “Elections in Russia: A final farewell to democracy?” Dr. Francois-Xavier de Donnea, Member of the Belgian Parliament and Member of the OSCE observation mission to Russia on the occasion of the parliamentary elections 2007 and Dr. Falk Bomsdorf, Head, Subregion East of Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit, Moscow, shared their impressions of the legislative elections in the Russian Federation on 2 December 2007.
Members from Pyongyang’s City Council visit Munich and Berlin
A delegation comprised of municipal experts from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was invited by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation to visit various city halls in the Federal Republic of Germany. The executive members of Pyongyang’s city council were particularly interested in how supplies are organized, issues regarding waste disposal in the municipality, as well as environmental solutions.
