FAN Malaysia
FAN Malaysia together with
Jörg Dehnert and Rainer Heufers
The first FNF Malaysian alumni reunion has witnessed the formation of a 'FNF Alumni Network' (FAN-Malaysia) to further promote liberalism in the country.

The first meeting of the FNF alumni in Malaysia was held at a college in the capital of Kuala Lumpur, alongside with the first German Alumni Conference on March 11 and 12.

About 20 Malaysian International Academy of Leadership (IAF) alumni have turned up at the event. IAF director Jorg Dehnert and FNF project director Rainer Heufers were also present. While most of the alumni only participated in the IAF programmes in recent years, the gathering also successfully brought together alumni who were among the pioneer batch of IAF participants.

First day
On the first day, the alumni - mostly local activists and politicians - had a lively session by getting to know each other and shared their experience at IAF in Gummersbach. They also discussed how the IAF programmes have helped to enhance their respective professionals and identified certain areas to be improved at the IAF programmes.

Later in the afternoon, Dehnert and Heufers also expressed their expectations on the Malaysian alumni, such as training should be conducted by the alumni after their return from the IAF. The alumni were divided into groups to discuss what shall the FNF and the Malaysian alumni do. This include looking into the possibility of the formation of a 'alumni association'.

At the end of the first day discussion, those who were present agreed that a concrete action should be taken and subsequently, alumni agreed that a steering committee to be formed.
As a result, a 10-member steering committee headed by Jonson Chong is formed. Those who have been appointed on the board including politicians, researcher, activists and journalist.

The line-up of the steering committee members are:

Chairperson: Jonson Chong
Deputy chairperson: Dr Zaliha Mustafa
Secretary: Yeam Hui Nih
Assistant secretary: Beh Lih Yi
Treasurer: Ng Yeen Seen
Assistant treasurer: David Ang
Regional coordinators
North: Cheah Kah Peng
Central: Arunagiri Subramaniam& David Ang
South: Dr Zaliha Mustafa
East Coast: Ng Yeen Seen

On his appointment, Chong said: "I am surprise and honoured. I hope I can serve the network well and strengthen ties between FNF and the alumni, and to promote liberalism in Malaysia."

Second day
The steering committee further discussed its basic organisational structure and outlined several main agenda in the concept paper during the second day of the meeting. As there are 60-odd IAF alumni in Malaysia including ministers, the main role of FAN-Malaysia is to develop a liberal network domestically and strengthen ties between FNF and the alumni.
The committee also aimed to raise public awareness and promote liberal agenda through a series of publications of reports and leaflets, organising conference and training.

The second day meeting also was a 'training of trainer' conducted by FNF's Busarin Dusadeeisariyawong, assisted by two local IAF alumni who experienced in conducting training. After Busarin had a brief talk on the techniques to be a good trainer, participants were break into two groups to discuss the role of a trainer, as well as the do's and don'ts of a trainer.
The participants later have to present their discussion results in the form of role-play, where they have a great time to enjoy, laughed and commented on each other 'show'.

Thus the end of the inaugural two-day meeting of the Malaysian IAF alumni and the steering committee is cast with high hopes to further carry out the agenda of liberalism in Malaysia.
